Community engagement for older people
Promoting social connections for older people
As we get older and perhaps retire or choose to socialise less, our social connections and eventually our community engagement often decline. This can
lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection. However, community engagement is crucial for older people's physical and mental wellbeing.
The benefits of engaging with your community
- To reduce loneliness and isolation
- To improve mental health and well-being
- To increase social connections and friendships
- To enhance physical health through regular activity
- To gain a sense of purpose and belonging
- To make daily life more fulfilling
Ensuring inclusive and accessible activities for all
At Neways at Home, we believe that everyone deserves to have fun and engage in
activities they enjoy, regardless of their abilities. To ensure this is made possible, we plan and facilitate a range of inclusive activities such as:
- Free bingo with prizes and refreshments.
- Arts and crafts sessions to encourage creativity and fun (adapted to all abilities)
- Gentle exercise classes to keep active and mobile (designed for older and less able people as well).
- Sensory sessions offering sensory experiences, such as music, light, and texture, tailored for those with sensory
needs.
- Outings and trips to local attractions (adapted for accessibility and
mobility needs).
Other ways we support community engagement
- By offering companionship care: our caregivers provide companionship and social interaction,
helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.
- Through community outings: we support clients in attending local community events,
classes, and activities.
- In-home activities: our caregivers can assist with in-home activities, such as
arts and crafts, games, and exercise, to keep minds and bodies active.
- Volunteering opportunities: we help clients find volunteering opportunities,
providing a sense of purpose and connection to their community.
