Funding and planning for home care

As we get older, our daily and long-term needs and our ability to meet those needs by ourselves changes. There's always the option of residential care; but the majority of people would prefer to remain at home and receive home care and home help. Funding and planning for these services can be a complex and daunting task. In this blog, we look at the options available and provide guidance on how to plan for home care.

Understanding your options
  1. Local authority funding: Contact the social care team at your local borough council to assess your eligibility for funding. They will conduct a means test to determine how much you need to contribute towards your care.
  2. Private funding: self-funding or using savings to pay for care. This option provides more flexibility and control over your care.
  3. NHS continuing healthcare: is funding for those with complex medical needs. This funding is not means-tested and covers 100% of care costs.
  4. Charitable organisations: Some charities offer grants or funding for home care, such as the British Red Cross or Age UK.
Planning for home care
  1. As for a care needs assessment: Contact your local borough council for a care needs assessment. This will identify your care needs as well as determine your eligibility for funding.
  2. Care plan: With family or friends or professional support create a personalised care plan outlining your needs and preferences. This is a first step to helping you decide what services you need and choosing the right care provider to ensure your needs are met. If you choose Neways at Home as your provider, we will of course help you to put together a care plan that suits your needs and budget.
  3. Budgeting: Understand / establish your budget once you've considered available funds and funding options. You may find it useful to get professional advice from a financial advisor.
  4. Care provider selection: Choose a reputable care provider. Read reviews and ask friends, family and the community for recommendations. You could also ask any health professionals responsible for your care, if they know of reputable providers you could speak to. Of course, here at Neways at Home we've very proud of our reputation and welcome all enquiries and reviews of our services.
  5. Early planning is always advisable. Start exploring your options and funding for care services at least 6-12 months before you need them. This gives you an opportunity to get the help you actually need without last minute stress or rushed decisions.
